Synopsis[]

The presenter (Michael Palin) introduces a new housing development in Bristol, the first to be built by characters from 19th century English literature.

Little Nell from The Old Curiosity Shop is fitting siphons into an asbestos ceiling, and Arthur Huntingdon (Eric Idle) from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall explains why the electricity is the most unique. Farmhands from Tess of the d'Urbervilles are building 12 foot walling blocks, who are supervised by Mrs Jupp from The Way of All Flesh.
