Pet Conversations is a sketch that appears in "Untitled," the tenth episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Synopsis[]

At a Pet Shop somewhere near Melton Mowbray, a man (John Cleese) enters to buy a cat, but the shopkeeper (Michael Palin) insists on selling him a terrier, even offering to physically alter it in order to look like a cat. The man changes his mind to wanting to buy a parrot, but the shopkeeper continues to insist on the terrier, offering to convert it into a parrot. Because the parrot conversion would not be finished by the time the man needs the parrot, the shopkeeper offers to convert it into a fish instead. The man accepts, on the condition that he can watch the conversion.

Two men (John Cleese, Eric Idle) comment on this being "predictable" and "done before," a Centurion (Terry Jones) adding that they did it for Caesar's Christmas show. Caesar (Graham Chapman) then corrects the Centurion, saying they did Jack and the Beanstalk.

Trivia[]

  • This sketch was originally submitted for inclusion in the BBC's annual Christmas Night with the Stars show, in November 1969. The sketch was rejected for its content and Confuse-a-Cat was featured instead. The sketch was later filmed as part of "Untitled" in December 1969.
