The Visitors is a sketch that appears in "The Ant, an Introduction," the ninth episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus.
Synopsis[]
The knight is rejected from the week's episode and a man (John Cleese) announces that it is time for something completely different. A couple, Victor (Graham Chapman) and Iris (Carol Cleveland) sit together, sipping wine. As Victor professes his love and they nearly kiss, they are interrupted by Arthur Name (Eric Idle), who takes over the scene, telling jokes and switching the romantic music to a Sousa march as his friends begin arriving. Brian (Cleese) and Audrey Equatol (Terry Jones) enter, also disruptive to Victor and Iris' romantic time, Brian forcing himself upon Iris and being loud with his wife while Arthur gets some drinks. Mr Freight (Terry Gilliam) enters, dressed in purple underpants with sequins, eye makeup, white wellies, and a necklace, soon joined by Mr Cook (Michael Palin), who brings an unwell goat. After Brian tells Iris to "drop 'em," she runs and Welsh miners (The Fred Tomlinson Singers) show up. Victor angrily tells them all to leave, so Brian shoots him. They then sing "Ding Dong Merrily on High."
Trivia[]
- An earlier version of this sketch was filmed for "It's the Arts" but was cut for timing reasons. It involved a couple being woken up at 3:20 AM by Mr. and Mrs. Equator (played by Cleese and Fanny Carby in this revision), who were delayed for the previous night's dinner party.
